Illegal drugs are the most frightening and unfortunately, the powerful enemies of many countries today. NGOs have been struggling to defeat the abuse of illicit drugs and to prevent the spread among the segments of the population, but delay the outcome. Some positive changes have taken place due to the programs adopted by several states, but there are still countries that show a large consumption of hallucinogenic substances.

Judging from recent statistics on illegal drug use in several countries, we can conclude that the economic situation of a nation is closely related to the percentage of drug users in their territory. Therefore, greater financial stability of a country is the more likely it is to the country’s inhabitants to use hallucinogens in their lifetime.

Despite the severe laws against drug abuse, the United States of America is the first country in the list of countries with high rates of addiction to illegal substances. The data show that nearly half of the entire American population (41.7%) had used illicit substances in 2001, a percentage that is even more alarming that in 1979 only 31.3% of the population makes use of cocaine, heroin, marijuana and other drugs.

New Zealand is the second country that has seen a high percentage of drug use. Unlike Americans, who prefer the cocaine and marijuana, the people of New Zealand seem to depend on amphetamines and ecstasy tablets. According to the national authorities, nightlife and numerous bars and clubs are the main factors why so many drug dealers and illicit laboratories in New Zealand.
